¨The success of our work contributes to the success of the German war effort. We are toileting against ourselves.¨ - Ellie pg: 156
I believe that this quote means that even though they were doing a great job, they were helping the enemy win. It´s like choice less choices, you have to do it because it will benefit you but on the other hand it with also benefit the enemy. We have to make these decisions everyday, that decision will either benefit us or be a total disaster. Sometimes we have to make those hard decisions because it will help others who are in need. I think if I ever had to make some kind of choice that would benefit the enemy and myself, I would not do it. I would rather go down with the enemy then watch it thrive.
This quote connects to the movie, The Hunger Games, because in the end scene Katniss tells Peeta to eat the berries with her. For those who do not know about the Hunger Games, every year one boy and one girl from twelve districts are forced to fight to the death until there is a victor. Katniss's sister was chosen but Katniss went instead because she knew that her little sister would not survive. There can only be one winner and she did not want them to have a winner so she and Peeta were gonna kill themselves. This shows that she would rather die than lose Peeta and have the people of the United States get a winner. This also relates to Jews in the ghetto because they would rather die in the ghetto then have the Nazis watch them suffer. In the book we're reading, I Have Lived For a Thousand Years, Aunt Serena broke all of her possessions because she did not want the Nazis to take them. In the movie the Pianist Wladyslaw and his family were chosen to be transported to the camps but his sister and brother were not chosen. At the train station his sister and brother chose to go with them instead of staying in the ghetto. Families would rather be together then to be separated from one another. Would you choose to stay with your family if you had the choice?
